What is a Pediatric Tooth Extraction?
As your pediatric dentists, we will do everything in our power to save your child’s teeth. However, there are times when a tooth extraction is not only necessary but optimal. This procedure is simple, and we can do it painlessly.
Reasons Your Child May Need To Undergo Tooth Removal
Rest assured, we will make every effort to avoid having your child’s teeth pulled. Sometimes, though, a baby tooth can negatively impact the adult tooth that has not yet pushed through. If this is the case we will recommend a tooth removal.
Similarly, if your child’s baby teeth have experienced a great deal of decay or show signs of gum disease, we may also recommend a tooth extraction. We sometimes extract baby teeth to alleviate crowding or prepare for orthodontic work.
The Tooth Extraction Procedure
Once we have determined that your child will need a tooth or teeth pulled, we will have a discussion with you to settle on the best type of anesthesia for your child. We can use laughing gas or general anesthesia. After we have safely numbed your child, we’ll gently and carefully perform the tooth removal.
After the Procedure
Your child may experience some discomfort after we have removed their tooth. This is perfectly normal, and you can use an ice pack to reduce pain and swelling. Your child’s gums may bleed as well, but this is normal and should only last for a day or so. If you desire, you can have your child rinse their mouth with salt water.
You can also give your child a pain reliever, such as ibuprofen. Prepare soft foods for your child that don’t require much chewing and have your child rest for several hours after the tooth extraction. If you notice signs of a fever, call your doctor immediately.
